ALL ABOUT ME

A Dedicated Guitar Instructor

I'm James Eyres, a self-employed Guitar/Bass Guitar Teacher. My school offers Guitar/Bass Guitar/Music Theory tuition, an introduction to modern Sound Recording Techniques. I also provide guitar repairs/upgrades (including set-ups, fretwork, string replacement and replacement parts) and bespoke design, including touch-ups, spray painting, carpentry and transfer/decal work.

I started playing Guitar at the age of 13, after my father told me he wasn't prepared to buy me a £2,000 Keyboard or a massive Drum Kit on a whim, and why didn't I try something cheaper like guitar instead?

I tried it and I didn't look back, beginning with Acoustic Guitar, progressing onto Electric Guitar and then Bass Guitar. In my time have spent well over the heady figure of £2,000 on guitars, so maybe, looking back, my dad was being somewhat naïve.
In my early career, I won awards for performing music in stage productions, regularly playing with lots of different types of bands/artists, developing my guitar ability from beginner to advanced levels over a number of years.

I am predominantly self-taught, coming from a musical family (My father and sister both play guitar), and was able to teach myself music theory to an advanced level. I began learning music theory at the age of about 19, starting with the basics of Guitar Tablature (TAB), moving to advanced, Grade-8 level Music Theory by the time I was 40.

I have a wide range of influences, starting with Rock Music, leading to many, many different genres (Electric Rock, Acoustic, Folk, Country, Pop, Funk, Soul and many more). I have studied in-depth many different guitar players' styles: Dave Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Gary Moore, Joe Walsh, John Noram, John Sykes, Don Felder, Chet Atkins, Martin Taylor, Martin Simpson, Roy Harper and Rory Gallagher to name but a few.

Having played Guitar/Bass Guitar for over 30 years, I began my music career in my teens, playing local pubs/clubs in a 4-piece original music band called Insanity Beach. The band progressed to a semi-pro outfit and released 7 albums over a 20 year period. Eventually this band shifted focus to cover versions and became a fully Professional outfit, playing pubs/clubs/weddings/corporate events and private shows both in the UK and around Europe, having also supported many well know bands, such as Status Quo, Hawkwind, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Leena Lovich, The Christians, and also supporting X-Factor/Pop Idol finalists, like Lemar, Ray Quinn, Janet Devlin and Marcus Collins.

The band progressed to the point where I was able, to quit my day job, and in 2009 I decided it was time to give something back to the community that supported me, by starting to teach guitar to others. So I began tutoring, firstly taking on two or three students and gradually building up my client base to around 15-20 lessons p/week.

I work from home, having all the equipment necessary for learning guitar here (Guitars, Amplifiers, Footboards, Microphones, Recording Equipment, Learning Materials, etc.), and students come to me: 51 Berrylands Road, Moreton, Wirral, CH46 7TX. (I also teach online, having used various different video chat applications (Zoom, Messenger, Ms Teams and Skype during the Lockdown period of our current pandemic). I have aided my students’ abilities to pass their G.C.S.E. Music and A-Level exams, also Private Guitar School theory/performance exams, such as Rock School and Trinity College of London exams, from Grade 1 to Grade 8. I have taught guitar for over 10 years now, to both adults and children from 8 years old upwards.

COVID-19 NOTICE: I AM NOW TEACHING IN A WELL-SPACED, AIRY ROOM THAT IS REGULARLY CLEANED AFTER EACH STUDENT. FACE MASKS ARE REQUIRED – UNLESS YOU ARE EXEMPT FROM WEARING THEM.

Words from My Clients

I've been having one-to-one guitar/music lessons with James for over 2 years now. In that time, he's been invaluable to my musical development, and has taught me the knowledge, skills and techniques to be really confident in my playing. Since starting lessons with James, I've written my own songs and performed at local Open Mic nights - before, I was only a bedroom strummer at best. I would recommend James as a tutor to anyone who wants to improve their guitar or music ability.

Lessons with James are great fun. His enthusiasm is infectious and the informality of the lessons make it much easier to take on board what he’s teaching.
My understanding of music theory has improved massively, and that is down to James’ ability to explain things at a level novices like me understand.
He allows you to develop at a pace best for you as he understands life can get in the way practice and sets ‘homework’ to help you develop, but not having a timescale on where he expects you to be helps playing guitar remain fun and not become a chore.
